{"id":1911,"date":"2026-09-02T05:30:49","date_gmt":"2026-09-02T09:30:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/star977fm.com\/?p=1911"},"modified":"2026-09-01T18:45:08","modified_gmt":"2026-09-01T22:45:08","slug":"09-02-26-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/star977fm.com\/index.php\/2026\/09\/02\/09-02-26-news\/","title":{"rendered":"09-02-26 News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Bangor man sentenced to life in prison following murder of ex-girlfriend<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Tuesday, a Penobscot County judge handed down a life sentence to 44-year-old Richard Thorpe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thorpe was convicted by a jury in June for killing his ex-girlfriend Virginia Cookson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">WABI news reports 16 people stood before the court to share victim impact statements including some of Thorpe\u2019s family members who also voiced their support for the life sentence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">State prosecutors tell WABI they hope the trial and maximum sentence sends a message regarding the severity of domestic abuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wabi.tv\/2026\/09\/01\/bangor-man-sentenced-life-prison-2024-murder-virginia-cookson\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">https:\/\/www.wabi.tv\/2026\/09\/01\/bangor-man-sentenced-life-prison-2024-murder-virginia-cookson\/<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Standoff stems from domestic dispute in Perry\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A domestic dispute in Perry on Saturday morning ended in a six-hour armed standoff and the arrest of Roger Brown Jr., 32.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Washington County dispatchers received a 911 text at 2:00 a.m. reporting a domestic incident in progress.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The female victim later called 911, stating Brown was pointing a gun at her and a juvenile inside the home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Responding deputies and Pleasant Point officers safely evacuated the woman and child.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brown, who had already fired multiple shots inside, retreated back into the house with a handgun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A perimeter was established, and the Maine State Police Tactical Team was called to the scene.
