However the idea of doing so\u00a0is causing concern in the community \u2014 both about possible environmental impacts and about whether the island city is prepared for or wants more cruise ship traffic downtown.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"v1moz-txt-link-freetext\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bangordailynews.com\/2025\/10\/03\/down-east\/downeast-government\/eastport-cruise-ship-dredging-concerns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.bangordailynews.com\/2025\/10\/03\/down-east\/downeast-government\/eastport-cruise-ship-dredging-concerns\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Rockland Police Department looking for new building<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Rockland Police Dept. is looking for a new building.<\/p>\n<p>According to the\u00a0<span class=\"v1nanospell-typo\">Penbay<\/span>\u00a0Pilot, Rockland police have been working out of a wet basement for years. Carpets have been stripped, walls have been gutted and multiple patches have been made, yet\u00a0every time it rains, water continues to flow in and the paper says black mold keeps growing. Police Chief Tim Carroll, with the City&#8217;s help, is proposing a new building, to be constructed on the site of Rockland&#8217;s current City Hall on Pleasant Street. Five acres will be used for the police department\u00a0and the City is hoping to divide and sell the other\u00a0parcels to make a true business park area at the site.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"v1moz-txt-link-freetext\" href=\"https:\/\/www.penbaypilot.com\/article\/rockland-station\/263307\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.penbaypilot.com\/article\/rockland-station\/263307<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hampden Academy is looking to ban cellphones in school throughout the day according to the Bangor Daily News.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"v1nanospell-typo\">RSU<\/span>\u00a022 plans to use magnetic\u00a0pouches to hold phones and\u00a0<span class=\"v1nanospell-typo\">smartwatches<\/span>\u00a0throughout the school day, which the school administration shared with parents in\u00a0a letter back in September.\u00a0According to the\u00a0<span class=\"v1nanospell-typo\">BDN<\/span>\u00a0the school says it\u00a0decided to implement the new policy because it &#8220;builds on Hampden Academy&#8217;s ongoing efforts to develop a cell phone policy that truly helps students learn.&#8221;\u00a0Hampden Academy is the first school in the Bangor region to ban students from using devices during the school day.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"v1moz-txt-link-freetext\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bangordailynews.com\/2025\/10\/07\/bangor\/bangor-education\/hampden-academy-ban-student-cellphones-n6hjn1me0n\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.bangordailynews.com\/2025\/10\/07\/bangor\/bangor-education\/hampden-academy-ban-student-cellphones-n6hjn1me0n\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>A local Mexican inspired food truck\u00a0is moving into a permanent indoor location.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Salsa Shack plans to relocate to the former\u00a0Friar&#8217;s\u00a0<span class=\"v1nanospell-typo\">Brewhouse<\/span>\u00a0Tap Room on Main Street in Bucksport according to the business&#8217;s Facebook page, The Salsa Shack stated this will be its last week in Ellsworth serving up its classic tacos, burritos,\u00a0<span class=\"v1nanospell-typo\">quesadillas<\/span>. An opening date at the new location has not yet been determined.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"v1moz-txt-link-freetext\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bangordailynews.com\/2025\/10\/08\/hancock\/hancock-business\/salsa-shack-bucksport-location\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.bangordailynews.com\/2025\/10\/08\/hancock\/hancock-business\/salsa-shack-bucksport-location\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Washington County seeks help from lawmakers<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Washington County commissioners are turning to the Maine Legislature for help to dig out of its ongoing budget crisis, according to the Bangor Daily News. The commissioners are proposing an\u00a0$8 million bailout from the Maine Legislature that is one of a three\u00a0bills aimed at helping Down East officials dig out of its ongoing budget crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Years of budget mismanagement have drained the county&#8217;s finances and led commissioners to ask voters for permission to issue up to\u00a0$11 million in bonds\u00a0to refinance debts and keep services running. The\u00a0<span class=\"v1nanospell-typo\">BDN<\/span>\u00a0says if voters decline to allow the bond issue, the county is on track to run out of money by January 2026.\u00a0\u00a0In\u00a0many other states, local governments are allowed to enter bankruptcy, shielding them from creditors and helping them refinance debts. Maine does not have such a law.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"v1moz-txt-link-freetext\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bangordailynews.com\/2025\/10\/08\/politics\/state-politics\/washington-county-maine-bailout-joam40zk0w\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.bangordailynews.com\/2025\/10\/08\/politics\/state-politics\/washington-county-maine-bailout-joam40zk0w\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Progress continues on Ellsworth\u00a0<span class=\"v1nanospell-typo\">Dysarts<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Construction is progressing quickly on the new\u00a0<span class=\"v1nanospell-typo\">Dysart&#8217;s<\/span>\u00a0gas station and car wash on High Street in Ellsworth. The owners anticipating a partial opening by the end of the year according to\u00a0Ellsworth American,<\/p>\n<p>The commercial redevelopment at 269 and 271 High St. will soon be home to a new 5,455-square-foot convenience store, a\u00a0car wash and a retail space, according to the project application.\u00a0One of the\u00a0former buildings\u00a0standing on the\u00a0lot, Branch Pond Marine, was demolished this summer.\u00a0<span class=\"v1nanospell-typo\">Dysart&#8217;s<\/span>\u00a0acquired the boating and storage facility in May of 2024 when the business\u00a0first began planning to combine the two properties. According to the\u00a0<span class=\"v1nanospell-typo\">Midcoast<\/span>\u00a0Villager:\u00a0Belfast&#8217;s Daily Soup is offering one final\u00a0<span class=\"v1nanospell-typo\">hurrah<\/span>\u00a0from Friday Oct.\u00a010\u00a0through Monday, Oct. 13, before it closes.The shop posted on its Facebook page that it has enough soup containers and a delicious menu planned in order to use up its remaining supplies. The nonprofit raised more than $52,000 at its annual dinner and auction held last month to support its residential and outreach programs. According to the Ellsworth American the event\u00a0marked 10 years of serving families in Hancock County and celebrated the expansion of outreach services into southern Washington County.
