Gov. Mills proclaims 2026 as the ‘Year of the Woman Farmer in Maine’

2026 has a new meaning in the pine tree state.

Gov. Janet Mills has proclaimed 2026 as the year of the woman farmer in Maine.

Aligning with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations’ international year of the woman farmer, Mills looks to acknowledge the role women play in Maine’s agriculture.

Throughout the year, Maine will highlight women farmers and agriculture leaders through public events, collaboration with legislature and national convenings.

Downeast food system partnership

The city of Ellsworth and the Union River center of innovation are ready for the half-day community forum focused on Ellsworth’s role in a sustainable food system for the Downeast region.

The free public event invites residents, food producers, business owners and other stakeholders to analyze how food moves from the field to the dinner table.

It’s at the Moore Center in Ellsworth on Jan. 22 and starts at 9 a.m. and registration is required.

Winter Market at Woodlawn Ellsworth

On Saturday, Jan. 24 starting at 10 a.m families and community members can head out to the Winter Market at Woodlawn Ellsworth.

Taking place inside the woodlawn barn, the market will feature local vendors offering locally sourced meats, artisan breads, baked goods and so much more.

Participants will also indulge in pottery, woodwork created by regional makers.

Beyond shopping participants can go sledding or ice skating however equipment will not be provided.

The cherry on top is the hot coffee and cocoa awaiting as people enjoy the winter event.

It’ll be located at 21 Black House Drive in Ellsworth.

Residents won’t have to travel too far to enjoy Dysart’s!

SPCA of Hancock County to host ‘Tarot Card Readings and Massages’

If you’re looking to unwind and possibly get some insight on what 2026 holds for you, look no further than the SPCA of Hancock County.

On Saturday Jan. 24 the SPCA will host their second ‘Tarot for Tails’ event from 11 a.m to 4 p.m. at the non-profits animal shelter.

You can get a tarot card reading and chair massage while giving $25 to the organization.

The proceeds will help support the programs to help out a furry friend or two and who knows, a new furry family member may be in the cards for you.

Get a headstart on your Valentine’s Day cards

We are in the middle of January so February is right around the corner and you know what that means, Valentine’s Day is upon us.

If you’d like to get ahead on a way to spread some love the College of the Atlantic has an opportunity for you to create and decorate Valentine’s day cards.

Starting at 10 a.m. on Jan. 24 an ecologist and seaweed expert will lead the fun family event for participants to practice techniques of pressing real seaweed to create a beautiful card.

It’s also in celebration of the memory of Scott Swann who started the loved tradition decades ago.
