Ellsworth preparing for cold weekend temperatures

With dangerously cold temperatures on the way, the City of ellsworth wants you to be aware of the resources in the area if you need them.

If you or someone you know needs a warm place to go local warming centers and emergency shelters may be available.

The city was notified that the INSPIRE Recovery Community Center located at 24 Church St. is open seven nights a week starting at 5:30 p.m. to 7 a.m.

However on weekends they open 8am to 4 p.m. with supper served every night.

Residents are encouraged to call 2-1-1 to find out the most up to date information on warming centers and cold-weather assistance.

Also check on your neighbors, especially older adults.

Lamoine Community center to be voted on in March

A new proposal has hit the town of Lamoine regarding a new community center.

After multiple meetings and community gatherings the select board along with the town has made it clear a larger community center will benefit the town.

The Ellsworth American reports officials will ask voters during an annual town meeting in March if they are willing to allow the select board to plan the project.

Town officials hope the process can move forward to provide more office space for workers, storage for records and supplies as well as maintenance and technology.

Maine Commercial Fishing Safety Council training sessions

The Maine Commercial Fishing Safety Council will host First Aid, CPR, Safety and Survival, and Drill Conductor training courses.

The division which is  a part of the Department of Marine Resources will host multiple sessions through May according to the PenBay Pilot.

The paper reports the first session is Friday, Jan. 30 starting at 9 a.m. at the Maine Maritime Academy Facility in Bucksport.

Annual blueberry conference will make its way to Ellsworth

Every year the University of Maine Cooperative Extension hosts their annual Wild Blueberry Conference.

This year, it’ll be at the Moore Community Center in Ellsworth on Wednesday Feb. 7.

Starting at 8:15 a.m. and going until 3:45, the conference offers an online option as well.

The Ellsworth American reports the full day event will focus on moving toward profitability using collaboration and science bringing experts, researchers, growers and industry leaders together.

The publication reports the conference is pay what you can with a suggested donation of $30 which supports the extensions wild blueberry programming.

Ribbon cutting ceremony for new pickleball center through Midcoast Rec

Pickleball players commence!

You’ve got a new location to play the popular sport in Rockport.

On Jan. 29 at 5 p.m.. Midcoast Recreation Center will host a ribbon cutting at the new Camden National Bank Pickleball Center.

After years of raising funds and watching the construction unfold, leaders tell the PenBay pilot this project is more than just a new facility, it’s about creating more opportunities for community members to connect and play.

12 Hour Play Relay at Northeast Harbor Library

Starting Saturday, January 31 moving into Sunday, February 1, the Northeast Harbor Library will host a 12 hour play relay event.

Teams will write, rehearse and perform an original ten minute play in the span of twelve hours.

In its fourth year, the challenge gives writers six hours on Saturday to write their play and the library will provide a prompt.

Then on Sunday the actors and directors will receive their scripts and they’ll have six hours to rehearse before lights, camera, action!
