Bangor school will temporarily close due to asbestos
Scary news out of the Bangor School Department Wednesday.
Officials announced the Fairmount School in Bangor will temporarily close its doors next year after asbestos was found in the ceiling.
The community outreach director told WABI an assessment showed students and staff could close out the school year safely and a temporary relocation plan for the 2026-2027 school year is in the works.
Ellsworth residents crowd city hall to hear plans for High Street corridor study
On Tuesday, residents of Ellsworth filled city hall to discuss a corridor study regarding the future of High Street.
Officials in Ellsworth stressed the plan being discussed is nowhere near the final stages.
The Ellsworth American reports concerns amongst citizens were over the closure of road access points and possible lane reductions on busy streets.
The publication reports other concerns were around staffing, timing of the project and how local law enforcement could monitor potential access points.
Gov. Janet Mills signs executive order appointing Maine data center advisory
Gov. Janet Mills signed an executive order Wednesday establishing the Maine Data Center Advisory Council.
This council of 15 people would make recommendations on large-scale data center development in Maine to protect ratepayers, maintain electric grid reliability, minimize environmental impacts and enable responsible economic development.
MDI YMCA secures housing for employees
A big move for the Mount Desert Island YMCA.
A home located on 2 Rockwood Ave in Bar Harbor has been purchased through the YMCA to help with housing their employees.
The Bar Harbor Story reports the purchase could help the nonprofit house employees in the home’s six bedrooms while undergoing an expansion.
Volunteer for the annual Card Brook Cleanup
If you’re looking to help spruce things up as the warmer temperatures move in, you can volunteer for the annual Card Brook cleanup!
Organized by the city, Frenchman Bay Conservancy and the Ellsworth Moose Lodge, community members will gather on Saturday, May 9 to clean Card Brook.
Organizers say participants can meet at 9 AM in the parking lot of Bangor Pipe and Supply Inc which is located at 55 Foster Street for check in.
Volunteers can also enter a raffle drawing and you’ll receive instructions at check in.
Wear sturdy footwear for wet and muddy conditions.
Lastly, if you volunteer you’ll have the chance to win gift cards from local businesses, enjoy a cookout and you could get a free t-shirt designed by a local student artist.

Jump into Spring with lambs at COA
Celebrate Spring with the College of the Atlantic!
You can join a flock of sheep as they enter the pasture for the first time this year on Saturday, May 9.
From 9 AM to noon, the lambs will enter the pasture and you can see lots of running, leaping and playing as the lambs leap onto the fresh grass after a long winter season.
Produce and merch will be available during the event at a student-run market table and all are welcome.
The free family-friendly event will take place at 532 Crooked Road and keep in mind parking is limited.
They ask that you please let your pets at home for this outing.
