Surry crash causes road closure
Late Monday morning, Hancock County dispatch was called to Convention Cove for a crash.
Officials say the road was closed for some time but reopened Monday afternoon.
There’s no word on what caused the crash or if any injuries were reported.
Man arrested after pepper spraying jogger in Rockland
Police arrested a man Sunday morning after a reported assault.
Rockland police say the man is accused of chasing a jogger and spraying her with pepper spray.
WABI news reports police arrested 37-year-old Nicholas Wallace and the attack appeared to be random.
Wallace faces multiple charges including criminal threatening, terrorizing and disorderly conduct.

Home heavily damaged by fire in Hampden
On Sunday night, a home was significantly damaged by a fire in Hampden.
Officials say the fire happened at around 9 p.m. in a mobile home park.
WABI news reports first responders say it was reported as a grill fire but quickly spread to the home.
Officials say everyone made it out safely and firefighters rescued a pet.

Operation Dry Water Weekend
National awareness around safety on the water this holiday week and weekend will be pushed forward.
The Maine Marine Patrol says they’ll be looking out for anyone who violates Maine’s boating under the influence laws, especially during Operation Dry Water weekend starting July 3-5.
For the national campaign, the U.S. Coast Guard will assist local, state and federal law enforcement agencies along the coast from Kittery to the Canadian border.
According to statistics from the U.S. Coast Guard alcohol use is the leading contributing factor in fatal boating incidents accounting for 20% of deaths.

Swan’s Island First Aid set to open in Blue Hill
Those who reside on Swan’s island in Blue Hill will see a seasonal, walk-in first aid station coming soon.
On July 6, the community led-effort will address the need for healthcare access on the island.
WABI news reports Swan’s Island First Aid will offer non-emergency medical care two hours a day, Monday through Friday for eight weeks ending on Aug. 28.
Currently, one doctor and one nurse practitioner travel to the island only one day per month versus the eight providers who will volunteer at the first aid station.
Gov. Mills makes donation to keep education center open
Katahdin Higher Education Center in East Millinocket received a big boost from Gov. Janet Mills.
$100,000 from her contingency funds will go to the center to help keep it open.
WABI news reports, the University of Maine system announced earlier this year the end of its partnership with the center which led to leaders and state partners reevaluating a sustainable long-term plan.
However, the governor’s funding will help keep it open while that long-term plan is finalized including on-site child care.

Bucksport set to celebrate America’s 250th all July
Many celebrations for July 4 are preparing to take place throughout the week and weekend, however Bucksport will be celebrating all month.
Over on the waterfront, there will be a Vendor Bender on July 14 from 5-8 p.m. give you a chance to shop local, eat local and support your neighbors.
Then on July 18, prepare for the Bucksport 250th Freedom Festival!
There your family can enjoy live music, vendors, contests and a pageant.
Before that, enjoy your Independence Day afternoon at a historic tea party hosted by the Bucksport Historical Society at the Town Gazebo on July 4.

Mainely Spinners donates $6,000 to Sarah’s House in Holden
A thoughtful start to the week as a local group presented a $6,000 check to Sarah’s House of Holden.
Mainely Spinners is a group that competes in the Back to Back Wool Challenge, where they shear, spin and knit a sweater as fast as they can.
They also raise awareness about the use of wool around the world.
Since 2023, they’ve fundraised for Sarah’s House, a non-profit that provides a home away from home for cancer patients seeking treatment in the area.
Now, the group has contributed a total of more than $13,000 to Sarah’s House.
