18-year-old arrested for connection to Belfast house fire
The Fire Marshal’s office says they’ve arrested an 18-year-old man for arson in connection to a house fire on City Point Road.
Christopher Gordon lives at the home with other family members and several pets.
Authorities say the fire took place at 8 a.m. on Wednesday and no injuries were reported.
Investigators believe the fire started in the basement and caused minor damage.
Authorities say Gordon was free on conditions of release from a separate incident at the time of his arrest.
He is being held without bail at Waldo County Jail.
Significant amount of meth retrieved during arrest in Enfield
On Tuesday night, the Penobscot County sheriff’s office seized a significant amount of meth during an arrest in Enfield.
A deputy noticed a man at the Dollar General with three active arrest warrants.
Deputies say 45-year-old Alton Whitney of Enfield was wanted for three counts of felony theft and during the arrest they found nearly 70 grams of meth.
Additional drugs were found and Whitney is facing numerous drug related charges including some felonies.
He’s being held at Penobscot County Jail.
Two arrested after months-long drug investigation
After police searched two homes in Washington County, two people were arrested.
The Maine DEA says 47-year-old Matthew Small of Hancock and 40-year-old Marissa Oullette of Fort Kent have been taken into custody.
Officials searched a home in Harrington and Cherryfield finding cocaine, and $2,400 in suspected drug money.
They were both taken to Washington County Jail and more arrests are expected.
Historic Bar Harbor library opens new modernized wing
After beginning work to modernize the building, the Jesup Memorial Library has unveiled its new wing.
The effort was the library’s first major expansion since it opened in 1911.
The Bangor Daily news reports that the wing included a disability-accessible bathroom and public electrical outlets.
The publication reports the $10.7 million project was aimed to improve the evolving needs of the library’s frequent visitors and seasonal residents while holding onto the beauty of the historic building.

In exactly a month, Healthy Acadia invites you to join them for an event.
On August 31 at Knowlton Park, they will host their ‘Overdose Awareness Day’ event.
It’ll be a space to honor those who we’ve lost and support families and communities impacted.
Organizers say they’ll remember the 390 Mainers who died from overdose in 2025 through a special butterfly tribute.
The event is free and also includes a community memory board.
Take a guided hike through Branch Lake Public Forest
On August 11, the City of Ellsworth’s Urban Forestry assistant will host a guided hike at Branch Lake Public Forest!
From 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. you can enjoy a 2.5 mile hike rating at moderate difficulty.
Hikers are encouraged to bring comfortable shoes and a bottle of water.
Participants will meet in the parking lot.
