Shooting reported in town of Knox

Maine State Police say there has been a shooting in the town of Knox in Waldo County Thursday according to WABI news.

The shooting happened around 4:25 p.m. on Bailey Road, according to police.

Authorities said the incident appears to be isolated.

MDI Hotel owner in hot seat as contractors file $14M in liens

After renovating the Asticou Hotel on Mount Desert Island, the owner of the property has been accused of cheating out $14 million in materials and services according to the Bangor Daily News.

The paper says 11 contractors from seven counties across the state have filed 13 liens against Asticou Hospitality LLC.

The BDN says liens include unpaid work and materials.

After reopening this past summer, the publication says the hotel was closed for almost two years for a major renovation.

‘Do Not Eat’ advisory expands

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife expanded a “Do Not Eat” wildlife consumption advisory.

It covers deer and turkeys harvested in parts of central Maine.

The new map now covers; Albion, Fairfield, Freedom, Knox, Skowhegan, Thorndike, Unity, and Unity Township.

State officials said wildlife in those communities have tested positive for high levels of PFAS.

Testing began in the greater Fairfield area back in 2021 when the first advisory was issued.

It has since expanded to three other areas over the last couple of years.

If you have questions about possible health effects from eating deer harvested in the advisory area, you can call the Maine CDC at 287-4311.

Waldo county agency extending services Down East

Waldo Community Action Partners will offer rural public transportation to Hancock and Washington counties according to the Bangor Daily News.

Those who lack reliable transport can call Waldo Community Action partners about the service Monday through Friday from 7:30AM to 4PM.

The paper says those who had been using Downeast Community Partners services will be contacted by the program.

Traffic alert in Ellsworth

The city of Ellsworth announced highway crews will be working on State Street by the courthouse Friday, Oct. 24, however both travel lanes will be open.

They tell Star 97.7 that drivers should use caution passing through the work zone.

Another traffic alert to keep in mind is the work being done on Tuesday, Oct. 28 as highway crews work on Oak Street.

Oak Street will be down to one lane alternative traffic between Davis and Park Street.

Lastly, on Nov. 3 & 4, the Ellsworth Parks and Recreation crew will be planting trees along Foster and Washington Street.

Foster Street will be down to one lane of alternating traffic.

Rotary Club of Ellsworth hosting Food Drive for Loaves and Fishes food pantry

The Rotary Club of Ellsworth tells Star 97.7 that they will be conducting their annual food drive for the Loaves and Fishes food pantry and they need your help.

On Saturday, Nov. 15 from 9AM to 2PM at the Ellsworth Hannaford they will accept food or monetary donations to help those in need in Hancock County.

They’re adding a challenge called ‘The Ton of Turkey Challenge’ where rotarians and community members donate as many turkeys as they can to the pantry.

Their goal is 134 turkeys!

You can donate at the Loaves and Fishes food pantry during operating hours which is Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9AM to 12:30PM or 4PM-6PM on Wednesdays.

If you’re out of town, you can donate $20 which will count as a turkey.

That can be mailed to the Rotary Club’s address at PO Box 741, Ellsworth.

Stonington Opera House hosting board game & movie night on Halloween

The Stonington Opera House will host a Clue board game and movie night in celebration of the film’s 40th anniversary on Halloween.

The Ellsworth American reports starting at 5PM, the lobby will open for local “detectives” to arrive and play a round of the Hasbro game that inspired the film Clue.

Guests are also welcome to bring their own version of the game.

Flatbread pizzas, snacks, and drinks will be available for purchase from the concession stand.

The board game segment of the evening is free and is an optional addition to the film screening.

The screening of the 1985 film, “Clue,” will begin at 7PM.

Film tickets are available online and at the box office for only $5 per person.
