Trenton Fire respond to vehicle fire Wednesday

The Ellsworth American reports the Trenton Volunteer Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire on Wednesday.

The paper reports crews were dispatched to Bar Harbor Road and found a 2007 Chevy utility-body truck engulfed in flames.

Firefighters immediately began to put the fire out and the driver safely exited the car with no injuries.

However the car is a total loss.

City of Ellsworth brainstorms plans for Assessing Department

During Monday night’s city council workshop, the city of Ellsworth discussed options about the dissolution of the assessing department according to the Ellsworth American.

City officials tell the paper they will instead pursue the idea of seeking an outside contractor to assist with city staff and recommend improvements to the department.

The paper says the current request for proposals involve functions for services on personal property assessments, real estate assessments and much more.

D-Day veteran Charles Shay dies at 101 in France

Charles Shay, a decorated Native American veteran who was a 19-year-old U.S. Army medic who landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day and helped save lives, died on Wednesday according to the Associated Press. 

He was 101.

Shay died at his home in France’s Normandy region, his longtime friend and carer said.

Shay, of the Penobscot tribe and from Indian Island in Maine, was awarded the Silver Star for repeatedly plunging into the sea and carrying critically wounded soldiers to relative safety, saving them from drowning. 

He also received France’s highest award, the Legion of Honor, in 2007.

Millions of bags of shredded cheese recalled for possible metal fragments

More than 1.5 million bags of shredded cheese are being recalled because they may contain metal fragments, according to the FDA.

The recalled products were sold under dozens of brand names at Target, Walmart, Aldi and other major retailers nationwide.

The recall affects various brands of shredded mozzarella cheese, shredded Italian-style cheese, shredded pizza-style cheese, mozzarella and provolone shredded cheese blends, as well as mozzarella and parmesan shredded cheese blends.

If you have any of these products, the FDA urges you to throw them away or return them for a refund.

Maine State Aquarium will open for Boothbay Lights Festival

The Maine State Aquarium tells Star 97.7 they will be opening during this year’s Boothbay Lights Festival on Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. from Dec. 5 through Jan. 3.

So you can celebrate the holidays and also discover the Gulf of Maine!

They say passes to the aquarium make great stocking stuffers, or that’s what ‘Santa Jaws’ says.

Bill Belichick and Robert Kraft finalists for 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame

Bill Belichick and Robert Kraft, two of the key pillars in the New England Patriots’ dynasty, were picked as finalists for the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame class according to the Associated Press.

Belichick was picked as the coaching candidate and Kraft was picked as the contributor in results announced on Wednesday. 

The members of the 50-person selection committee can vote for three of the finalists under rules put in place last year with candidates needing 80 percent of the votes to make it into the Hall. 

A maximum of three candidates can reach that threshold. If no candidate gets 80 percent, the top vote getter will be elected.

Hancock county sheriff’s office set to participate in Wreaths Across America stop in Ellsworth

Wreaths Across America’s annual ‘Escort to Arlington’ will begin on Sunday, Dec. 7.

It will stop at the Downeast Family YMCA in Ellsworth for an indoor ceremony to honor local veterans and remember our fallen.

Music, guest speakers and ‘Welcome Home Observance’ will be held and the public is invited.

You’ll even see members of the Hancock county sheriff’s office in attendance.

The convoy will arrive at 8:40 a.m. and the ceremony will begin at 9:10.
