For those traveling in Ellsworth highway crews will be finishing up drainage work on Hancock Street and Elm Street throughout the day.
Also on Tuesday, crews will be replacing a catch basin at the intersection of Oak Street and Birch Avenue, both roads will be down to one lane alternating traffic.
Ellsworth Public Works officials tell Star 97-7 that closure will be in effect for Monday however from Tuesday, Sept. 30 through October 2, there will be a crew ditching along Happytown Road and they advise motorists to use caution driving in the work zone.
Fears of Acadia closing rises amid potential government shutdown
Mount Desert Island officials are concerned about the potential government shutdown affecting operations at Acadia National Park.
The Bangor Daily News says if Acadia National Park shuts down it could put a dent in the area’s tourist economy which draws hundreds to the area in October.
The paper says MDI officials hope congressional leaders can reach an agreement before Wednesday so that services will continue uninterrupted until the season winds down in November.
October is the peak fall season.
Ceremony honors lives lost on SS El Faro in Rockland
10 years ago, Hurricane Joaquin took the lives of 33 crew members aboard SS El Faro, including five Maine Maritime Academy graduates.
According to WABI news, a remembrance ceremony was held in their honor on Saturday.
The ceremony took place at the El Faro Salute! sculpture in Rockland, a memorial made to commemorate the lives lost aboard the ship.
Attendees tell WABI news, friends and family members honored those no longer with us with prayers, reflection, and the ringing of eight bells, a traditional show of respect to deceased mariners.
October 1 marks the anniversary of the El Faro’s sinking. An additional ceremony will be held in Jacksonville, Florida, on that date.
City of Ellsworth confirms it will own all municipal streetlights
The city council approved a contract to acquire an estimated 500 streetlights in the municipality according to the Ellsworth American.
Earlier this month, the IT Systems Administrator stated that if the streetlights, which are currently leased from Versant Power, are owned by the city, Ellsworth could save about $43,000.
The paper reports the entire project will cost $400,000 through a seven-year municipal lease.
The project will allow the city the power to adjust the design of the lights including the shape, color and brightness.
Belfast Garden Club and Public Works look to brighten up the Post Office
The Belfast Garden Club Public Gardens committee, volunteers and city officials have opened up a new chapter in beautifying the Post Office, according to the Pen Bay Pilot.
The publication said they officially opened the redesigned garden in front of the Belfast Post Office on Wednesday, September 24.
The Garden Club tells the paper the safety of the garden was also highlighted.
Handrails have been installed to improve visibility for traffic and pedestrians, decorative boulders are installed as well as a slew of new plants.
Hancock County download library changes suspending system
Book lovers in Hancock county, if you use the Hancock County Download Library the process of suspending holds has changed.
Jesup Memorial Library officials tell Star 97-7, the system has been simplified and when you suspend a hold, you no longer have to select an end date.
Instead, you should unsuspend it when you’re ready but if you have any questions, contact the circulation staff at the library.
