Teen dies in snowmobile crash

A 17-year-old Aroostook girl died after a snowmobile crash in Washburn on Saturday according to WABI news.

The Maine Warden Service says the crash happened Saturday afternoon around 1:00 p.m.

Wardens say a 17-year-old boy was driving the snowmobile down story street with the girl as his passenger. 

Investigators say the boy came to a 90-degree turn in the road and was driving too fast to make the turn.

They say the snowmobile hit a curb, flipped over, and hit the side of a house. 

Both teens were ejected.

The crash is under investigation.

Man taken into custody after allegedly killing his mother in Corinth

WABI news reports a man has been taken into custody after allegedly shooting and killing his mother in Corinth.

Police responded to a home on Main street Saturday morning just before 8:30.

They say they found the body of 41-year-old Abigail Thomas with a gunshot wound.

WABI news reports a preliminary investigation determined that she and her son had been involved in an altercation.

Police have taken 22-year-old Daniel Derosie into custody and charged him with murder.

The investigation is ongoing, and the body of Abigail Thomas will undergo an autopsy at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta.

Police investigating Tremont deaths as murder-suicide

After two people were found dead in Tremont, Maine State police are now investigating the case as a murder-suicide.

Police say a caller reported finding two people dead near Big Rocks Road on Dec. 23 and they were husband and wife.

On Friday, the medical examiner determined the cause of death for both individuals were gunshot wounds; however the manner of death for the wife was ruled a homicide.

This led investigators to find the death for the husband was ruled a suicide.

Red Cross seeking blood donations

The Red Cross tells WABI news they are in immediate need for donations of both blood and platelets.

They say all blood types are needed right now to avoid a drop in the blood supply.

WABI news reports the week between Christmas and the New Year is a critical time for donations however it’s challenging to get people out to donate.

Blue Hill Public Library to present ‘Take a Hike: Abstracted Landscapes from Here and There’

Over at the Blue Hill Public Library, you can start the new year by enjoying a solo exhibition of paintings done by a Surry artist.

Leaders at the library tell Star 97.7 the ‘Take a Hike’ Abstracted Landscapes presentation will explore Richard Keen’s work of place and perception.

The collection will feature abstracted Maine landscapes shaped by memory, movement and lived experience.

Maine poster and essay contests accepting entries

The 2026 Maine Constitution Poster and Essay Contests are officially open for entries.

These contests are designed to promote the history of Maine, the Maine constitution and the importance of democracy and voting.

The essay will challenge students across the state to learn more about American history as we commemorate America’s 250th birthday.

Kids from kindergarten to 12th grade can participate.

Winter Wonder Yoga at the Ellsworth Public Library

It’s still Winter Break for the kids and if you’re looking for something to do or a fun activity to get them out and about head over to the Ellsworth Public Library on Tuesday for Winter Wonder Yoga.

Certified yoga instructor Dianna Sprout will bring a unique yoga experience for kids ages 3-6 with songs, mindful breathing and a chance for guardians and kids to relax together.

It’ll take place from 1-1:30 p.m. in the Riverview Room.
