Maine schools close due to nationwide threat

After classes were evacuated Monday morning, the Hancock County Sheriff’s office said a nationwide hoax involving computer-generated messages was the cause.

George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill was one of the schools that received a threat Monday via voicemail.

On top of evacuation protocols, students were also asked to stay home according to WABI news.

Authorities say there is no threat to the public.

Teen accused of killing woman on Crawford Pond faces judge

18-year-old Deven Young faced a judge on Monday after being accused of killing a woman on Crawford Pond last summer.

Young is charged with murder in the death of Sunshine Stewart after she was found dead on July 3 of last year.

The Midcoast Villager reports the hearing was closed to the public and no one commented following the hearing.

The publication says prosecutors are attempting to try him as an adult however the case is sealed until the court determines whether Young is competent to stand trial.

Headwaters of Meadow Brook conserved thanks to funds awarded

The community has stepped up to conserve 77 acres in the headwaters of Meadow Brook on Deer Isle.

The Island Heritage Trust has made efforts to do so and now they’ve been awarded $250,000 to complete that mission.

The funding is through the climate resilience conservation fund according to the Ellsworth American as the Maine Coast Heritage Trust and the Governor’s Office of Policy Innovation and Future collaborated.

The project aims to protect the quality of water as it is a vital spot for elver and clam harvesting.

Now leaders await the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for final approval.

Maine Seacoast Mission received $50K grant to support youth programming

Two youth education programs through the Maine Seacoast Mission got a big boost!

$50,000 was awarded to the organization by the Evelyn S,. and K.E. Barrett Foundation.

The first program supported, called Journey, serves Washington county teens providing students an opportunity to build personal, career and post-secondary education aspirations.

The second, teaching and learning collaborative program, helps connect students and teachers at one and two-room schoolhouses to prepare students to thrive in their communities.

Starting Tuesday, Healthy Acadia will be holding the “Warm Your Heart” silent auction fundraiser to benefit programs and resources they offer.

Bidding has officially started and will close on Feb. 9th at 8 p.m.

Penobscot teen heading to Super Bowl LX

It’s a big weekend for Patriots fans ahead of Super Bowl 60 and for one fan, it’ll be a moment to remember.

15-year-old Avery MacNair of Penobscot will be cheering them on all thanks to Make-A-Wish.

He and his brother will go to the super bowl to see their first ever Patriots game according to WABI news.

He predicts this game will probably be a defensive one so 17-23.
