New Hampshire woman dies in Jackman snowmobile crash
A New Hampshire woman died following a snowmobile crash in Jackman.
The Maine Warden Service tells Star 97.7 family and friends were riding on ITS 89 in Jackman Friday morning when one of the riders lost control of the snowmobile and crashed.
Officials say 23-year-old Michelle Carolina Cantos died at the scene.
Wardens believe inexperience appears to be a factor in the deadly crash.
Hermon woman faces manslaughter charge in Topsham crash
After a fatal head-on crash in Topsham last October, a woman that killed her passenger and seriously injured another driver is facing charges.
A Sagadahoc County grand jury indicted 26-year-old Lacey Wiles of Hermon on charges of manslaughter, aggravated assault, operating under the influence causing death, aggravated driving to endanger and operating under the influence causing injury according to Topsham police.
On Oct. 4 2025, WABI news reports a crash on route 196 on Merrymeeting Bridge took place and police say Wiles was driving a car that crossed the centerline and struck a GMC pickup truck head-on.
Police say Wiles was taken into custody Friday and is being held at the Penobscot County jail on $50,000 cash bail.
The investigation is ongoing.
Youth shelter in Mars Hill set to close
Due to the lack of funding opportunities and resources to operate, the Northern Lighthouse Safe Harbor Youth Shelter in Mars Hill is closing later this month.
After announcing the closure of the transitional living program for homeless youth in Aroostook County they now say the shelter will officially close on Tuesday, Feb. 24.
WAGM reports for the past three years the shelter has provided emergency shelter, safety and supportive services to youth throughout the state.

Maine Army National Guard company returns home
114 soldiers of the Maine Army National Guard returned to Bangor from deployment on Saturday.
The Skowhegan and Lewiston-based 136th Engineering Vertical Construction Company was deployed in Fall 2025 to Saudi Arabia.
WABI news reports they worked with the Army, Air Force and military to improve infrastructure and security.

Jackson Memorial Library puzzle swap and chili sale
The Jackson Memorial Library in Tenants Harbor will host its annual Puzzle Swap and Chili Sale on Saturday, Feb. 21.
Starting at 9:30 a.m. participants can enjoy a wide range of puzzles available or swap an old puzzle in for a new one.
The Pen Bay Pilot reports you can enjoy a nice bowl of locally made chili including beef, turkey and black beans and they’ve got the cornbread covered.
