Trial for Bangor man accused of killing ex-girlfriend continues
It’s now Day five in the trial against 44-year-old Richard Thorpe after he’s been accused of strangling his ex-girlfriend.
39-year-old Virginia Cookson was found dead in her home in September 2024.
Last week the jury heard more than 25 hours of testimony with the latest witnesses being an inmate Thorpe shared a cell with and his mother.
According to WABI news the inmate revealed while sharing cells with Thorpe, the 44-year-old admitted to choking his ex-girlfriend.
His mother also came to the stand testifying that he sent an alarming video showing how upset he was about their breakup a couple of days leading up to her death.
Closing arguments in the trial are expected Monday.
Petition swirling seeking recall to five city councilors
After an Ellsworth city council member had been sanctioned last week, a petition is now circulating amongst a group of Ellsworth residents to recall five city councilors.
Claims included in the petition allege discrimination against a business owner, the holding of an illegal executive session and city funds spent without a cause.
The Bangor Daily News reports two days after the city council voted to censure councilor Steven O’Halloran over alleged misconduct toward city employees, an affidavit with 30 signatures of local voters was submitted.
Ellsworth first responders dispatched to motorcycle crash
On Thursday, a motorcyclist crashed on Main Street.
Just before 5 PM the crash happened near the intersection of Water and State Street causing heavy traffic.
The Ellsworth American reports the motorcyclist was transported to the hospital by a Northern Light Health ambulance and first responders quickly cleared the scene.
Honor Flight Maine embarks on journey to honor veterans
Honor Flight Maine left the Bangor International Airport Friday for several veterans to take a trip of a lifetime.
Veterans visited several monuments and historically significant locations.
WABI news reports the trip gives veterans an opportunity to reflect on their service and in some cases open up.
The group has returned to Bangor after veterans met with fellow veterans, learned stories about others and most importantly honored all that they have done for our country.

Blue Hill Public Library hosts free author event
A free author event is on the horizon so you may want to mark your calendars.
The Blue Hill Public Library will host Jeanne Bartlett for her book called ‘A Voice Downstream.’
Happening on Monday, June 8 at 7 PM, you can hear about Bartlett’s life work.
It involves poetry, the exploration of nature, kinship, loss and more as the book writes itself.

Meteor over Massachusetts causes explosion
Well if you haven’t heard the buzz over a boom that was detected across New England over the weekend, officials are now saying a meteor is to blame.
The American Meteor Society says that booms were heard at about 2:30 in the afternoon on Saturday as a meteor entered the atmosphere around the New Hampshire border with Massachusetts.
However that was felt far and wide with reports coming out of Maine as well.
Officials say it was larger than a normal fireball resulting in about a yard wide.
So if you felt that, it’s true.
