Eagle Point Energy Fire
(Orrington) – A major fire last night brought at least 10-departments to the Eagle Point Energy Center in Orrington. The facility, formerly owned by the Penobscot Energy Recovery Company, was working to become operational as a trash to energy incinerator again after it closed down a few years ago. Firefighters responded to the call at about 9-thirty last night, and media posts showed flames and smoke coming from what appears to be the main boiler building. Eagle Point and the remains of PERC are embroiled in a lawsuit over contracts with dozens of municipalities who had sent their trash to incinerator for decades but are currently paying for it to be landfilled in Old Town. A fire in 2024 badly damaged the facility.

The property owner, 60-year old John Crawford of Hancock was captured Monday night. He’s charged with trafficking cocaine and fentanyl. Agents said the drugs have a street value of $30-thousand dollars.
Cutler Released
(Machias) – A Washington County judge has ordered former Gubernatorial candidate Eliot Cutler released from jail after his arrest on June 11th for allegedly violation probation on possessing child sex abuse materials. The Bangor Daily News reports Cutler was jailed for the 6th time after he refused to sign a probation treatment plan that was contrary to a specific court order. Cutler’s attorney said his client was correct in not signing an order from a treatment provider. A hearing is continued to August to give the state time to review Cutler’s devices for child porn.
Log Cabin Restaurant may become a tavern
(Bar Harbor) – The building that housed the former Log Cabin Restaurant in Bar Harbor may reopen as a tavern. The Bangor Daily News reports a website promoting the Bear Creek Tavern advertises a spring 2026 opening, but the vacant restaurant is not yet in operation. The property is owned by the Connecticut based investor who also purchased Beal’s Lobster Pier in Southwest Harbor.
Deer Isle Causeway
(Deer Isle) – The Maine DOT may spend up to $22-million dollars to raise the level of the causeway connecting Little Deer Isle to the main part of the island on Route 15. The Ellsworth American reports DOT officials took comment on the plan a week ago that would build up the causeway by 4-and-a-half feet. The design is expected to last 75-years. About $12-million dollars would come from congressionally directed spending. Residents had questions about how huge boulders that would line the causeway would get in place, as there are strict weight limits on the bridge between Sedgwick and Deer Isle, and the water leading to the causeway is very shallow.
