Petition recalling five city councilors in Ellsworth fails
On Friday, June 26, a petition organized to recall five Ellsworth City Councilors were submitted by the deadline.
However, the required threshold of signatures was not met.
The Ellsworth American reports the recall committee needed signatures from no less than 20 percent of registered voters in the city within 30 days; however city manager Charlie Pearce says there weren’t enough.
Now the publication reports the city has 20 days to analyze whether each petition was properly signed as clerks are reviewing submissions with legal counsel.
This after the effort was launched in May following allegations of the councilors violating city law, discriminating against a business license applicant and more.
New approach to summer food trucks slots at Harbor Park
Harbor Park, owned by the city of Ellsworth is about to enter its peak season with locals and visitors alike.
The City of Ellsworth heard from the harbor commission on different ways to offer weekly food vendors slots after concession services were not confirmed.
The Bangor Daily news reports there are still zero bids, so they’re seeking approval from the city council to allow up to two food vendors the option to rent a waterfront space for $100 per week.
This could begin as soon as possible providing visitors with a variety of options.
Red cross urges Mainers to be aware of firework safety
Many safety reminders will be heard throughout the week especially around firework safety.
The Red Cross are urging residents to celebrate safely and understand the serious risks of fireworks.
Officials say thousands of people are injured due to handling fireworks incorrectly leading to burns, serious injuries, structure fires and in some cases death.
They also urge residents to protect your family by installing and testing smoke alarms on every level of your home, create and practice a home fire escape plan, and keep basic fire aid supplies on hand to treat minor burns.
Fireworks Safety Tips The Red Cross recommends attending public fireworks displays whenever possible. If you choose to use fireworks at home, follow these precautions:
- Never give fireworks to small children.
- Never throw or point fireworks at people, animals, vehicles, or structures.
- Always follow instructions on the packaging.
- Keep a bucket of water or hose nearby.
- Ensure the person lighting fireworks wears eye protection.
- Light one firework at a time and never attempt to relight a malfunctioning device.
- Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from children and pets.
- Avoid using fireworks around pets; loud noises can cause fear, injury, or disorientation.
Protect Your Family This Holiday In addition to practicing firework safety, the Red Cross encourages families to take simple precautions to prevent fire-related emergencies:
- Install and test smoke alarms on every level of your home.
- Create and practice a home fire escape plan.
- Keep basic first aid supplies on hand and know how to treat minor burns.
