Groundbreaking ceremony held for new Hancock County Judicial Center
The groundbreaking to the next chapter of law in Hancock county was held Tuesday.
Local officials and the chief justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court gathered for the event in Ellsworth to celebrate new beginnings for the Hancock County Judicial Center.
WABI news reports the property which is expected to be built on an 18-acre parcel of land will extend off of Merrill Lane thanks to an agreement between the Woodwell Family and the city of Ellsworth.
The Maine Supreme Judicial Court chief justice says the new judicial center will be a much needed upgrade allowing court cases to be a safer experience.
Construction is expected to take place in about a year and a half.
Recall petitioners get extra time to collect signatures
After organizing a group to recall five Ellsworth city councilors, a committee was granted extra time after failing to reach the threshold.
The effort started in May after allegations against five councilors claim failure to maintain fiscal responsibility, violating city law and more.
The Ellsworth American reports after the petitions were submitted on June 26, each failed needing 1,279 signatures to proceed to a recall election.
The publication reports each one needs about 450 signatures.
Man arrested in Bangor after assault, bail violations
A man is facing assault charges after police say he threw items at employees and chased a worker out of a Bangor coffee shop Monday.
Bangor Police say 30-year-old Tyler Corliss, described as a transient, told police he believed he was moving items using “supernatural powers,” according to authorities.
WABI news reports surveillance video shows Corliss throwing items at staff and striking at least one person, police said.
He also chased an employee out of the store.
Corliss was booked into Penobscot County Jail.
Deputy Luke Gross Memorial Highway set to be marked
The official marking of a portion of Route 3 has been marked to honor Deputy Luke Gross.
Deputy Luke Gross Memorial Highway in Trenton will provide a lasting tribute to Gross’s service and sacrifice to the people of Hancock County.
The Ellsworth American reports the highway received legislative approval.
A formal dedication and unveiling of the memorial highway signs will be on Friday, July 24 at 10 a.m. according to the publication.
World’s largest mast sails off Bar Harbor waters
The day before the fourth, a once in a lifetime view could be seen off Bar Harbor waters.
The world’s largest single-mast sailing yacht arrived and was anchored in Frenchman Bay.
The Bangor Daily News reports the superyacht towers at 291-feet high and can accommodate up to 16 guests and 17 crew members.
