RSU 63 school board member arrested and appears in court

After an infant overdosed in May, the Penobscot County Sheriff’s office says they’ve arrested the woman they’d been searching for.

36-year-old Brittany Wood, who is also a member of the RSU 63 school board, made her first court appearance Wednesday afternoon.

WABI news reports Wood faces charges of domestic violence, aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

Her nine-month-old daughter stopped breathing on May 31 and first responders gave the child Narcan which made her responsive and breathing.

Wood was arrested in Brewer.

Serious injury reported after propane explosion in Ellsworth

On Tuesday, a person was taken to the hospital after a propane explosion in Ellsworth.

It happened at around 3 p.m. inside a bus that was converted into an RV on North Street.

Investigators tell Star 97.7 the fire marshal’s office says the fire started underneath the propane range, likely caused by an electric compressor motor on a nearby refrigerator.

Authorities say one person was inside and suffered serious burns.

The RV has two 25-pound propane cylinders.

Hancock County Democrats announce special nomination meeting

This Saturday and Sunday, July 18-19 meetings will be held across the state in all counties to select delegates ahead of the statewide convention.

This after Graham Platner withdrew his candidacy.

The Ellsworth American reports those in Hancock County can check in at the Ellsworth Elementary-Middle school on July 18 starting at 8 a.m. to meet delegate candidates.

It’s open to anyone registered as a Democrat in Hancock county as of June 9.

Delegates will then represent Hancock County at the statewide convention which will be in Bangor at the Cross Insurance Center on July 25.

Blue Hill Wildfire protection plan expands

Acquiring a tenth town, the wildfire protection plan on the Blue Hill Peninsula will expand.

Isle au Haut will be a part of the plan designed to reduce wildfire risk.

The Ellsworth American reports the plan, which is funded by the Department of Agriculture, finds ways to address risks like drought and warmer conditions that could pose a threat to homes and structures across the region.

The publication reports a recent grant enabling the town of Isle au Haut to expand their scope of service across the island with no additional charge.

Maine Commercial Fishing Remembrance Day

Coastwide, ceremonies will be held honoring those lost at sea while inspiring a safer future for commercial fishermen.

On Tuesday, July 21 Maine Commercial Fishing Remembrance Day will be observed marking the first statewide remembrance following the passage of legislation to make the day a law.

Two public ceremonies will be held at the Lost Fishermen’s Memorial in Lubec at 11 a.m. and at the Fishermen’s Memorial Park in Boothbay Harbor at 3 p.m.

AIO announced ‘Fill the Strand’ date

Believe it or not, many will be thinking about school supplies once again.

That means AIO’s Fill the Strand event will get underway soon!

On Friday, August 7 is when the second Fill the Strand event will take place benefiting AIO’s children’s program providing snacks, diapers and back to school supplies.

Organizers say in each seat within the history theater, people will be able to see the support around Knox County children as AIO continues to support families in the wake of rising food and energy costs.
