Canada drops seafood from retaliatory tariffs on U.S.

Canadian officials say they have decided to remove seafood products from the retaliatory tariffs that are set to go into effect Sept. 8.
WABI news reports the announcement was made Wednesday night by Canada’s department of finance.
This after Canada announced tariffs on more than 20 billion dollars worth of American imports including lobster after the Trump administration imposed 50% tariffs on some Canadian goods.
According to the Maine Lobstermen’s Association Canada purchases about half of Maine lobster during the fall fishing season.
Maine Maritime Academy cuts one program to expand another
After noticing a decline in an ocean studies program, Maine Maritime Academy has cut it.
Oceanography has officially ended at MMA after a vote.
The Bangor Daily news says the academy’s board of trustees made the decision however more offerings could come about in nuclear engineering technology.
Leaders at MMA say for years the oceanography program has seen low enrollment however with that decision no faculty would be affected.
Updated visuals of High Street presented to Ellsworth residents
During a city meeting on Tuesday night, final designs of the High Street corridor study were presented.
City officials have been compiling feedback from residents and stakeholders on how to improve the area of High Street between the Main and Myrick intersection.
The Ellsworth American reports the study focuses on pedestrian and bicyclist safety, stormwater streetscaping, and green infrastructure.
However, some remain concerned about how the improvements could impact taxpayer money and the possibility of some residents who’ve called the area home for decades lost their homes.
The city council, Maine DOT and technical assistance partners will review the final designs before things move forward.
Knox County Sheriff’s deputy seriously injured after arrest
While attempting an arrest to a wanted person in Friendship, a Knox County Sheriff’s deputy was seriously injured.
It happened on Wednesday afternoon.
The Pen Bay Pilot reports during an ongoing investigation, a physical altercation broke out between a deputy and the person he was trying to arrest resulting in serious injuries to the deputy.
The name of the deputy was not released and he was in stable condition.
New composting options available with Ellsworth pilot program
The City of Ellsworth announced residents will have more options when it comes to composting.
A free food composting pilot program is expected to open on Sept. 2 at the Ellsworth Transfer Station.
The project is a part of one of the first efforts through the city’s $74,000 community action grant which was announced in July.
Options Ellsworth residents have are listed below:
- Free Transfer Station drop-off: A new pilot program will allow Ellsworth residents to bring food scraps to designated compost collection bins at the Ellsworth Transfer Station at no additional cost.
- Expanded school composting: Food composting, previously underway at Ellsworth Elementary Middle School, is expanding to Ellsworth High School. Community Action Grant funding will support additional collection by Chickadee Compost and new bins, while a grant from Hannaford helped the schools expand the program.
- Neighborhood drop-off: Residents may use the existing community food scrap drop-off location at Fogtown Brewing Company at 25 Pine Street, Ellsworth or propose other neighborhood collection sites of the same nature.
- Curbside collection: Chickadee Compost also offers an optional fee-based curbside food scrap collection program in select areas of Ellsworth’s urban core.
Land return & stewardship at forefront for COA’s next Coffee and Conversation
As the College of the Atlantic continues their conversations around informative topics within the region, the topic around the final Coffee & Conversation session has been announced.
On Tuesday, Sept. 1, discussions around land, authority and stewardship to Wabanaki communities will be the focus.
The free event will take place at the Thomas S. Gates Jr. Community Center starting at 9:30 a.m.
