Appeals Court Dismisses Lobstermen’s Defamation Suit

A federal appeals court has ordered the dismissal of a defamation lawsuit filed by the Maine Lobstermen’s Association and four other groups against California’s Monterey Bay Aquarium.

The suit followed the aquarium’s Seafood Watch program placing U.S. and Canadian lobster on its “do not eat” list in 2022, citing risks to endangered North Atlantic right whales.

The First Circuit ruled that the recommendation did not target specific members of the group, as required for a defamation claim, and sent the case back to the district court with instructions to dismiss it according to WMTW.
